Actually the boat has four sides/planks, counting the stern, but because the word for four and the word for death are similar in Cantonese as well as in Szeyup (formerly spoken by many Chinese Americans) one would never call a boat "four planks" !!!! The boat shown here actually represents an combination of elements from Chinese small boats and general North American work boats of the same time period.
